Familiarization Courses

BASIC COURSE (2 weeks)

Aim: Introduces cadets to training centre life with a focus on air cadet training opportunities. Intended for cadets 12-14 years old who have completed Level 1 training. Instruction includes first aid, drill, marksmanship, physical and recreational training, citizenship, general cadet knowledge. Other activities include swimming, building and flying model aircraft and rockets and team sports.
Prerequisites: Must be medically and physically fit, and complete Level One training by 30 Jun of the current training year.
Training Centre: Trenton

BASIC MUSIC COURSE (3 weeks)

Aim: Similar to Basic Course, intended for members of a cadet squadron band. Approximately 14 days music instruction interspersed with seven days of general cadet training.
Prerequisites: Must be medically and physically fit and complete Level One training by 30 Jun of the current training year.
Training Centres: Blackdown, Penhold

BASIC PIPES & DRUMS COURSE (3 weeks)

Aim: Identical to Basic Music Course, intended for members of a cadet squadron pipe & drum band. Approximately 14 days music instruction interspersed with seven days of general cadet training.
Prerequisites: Must be medically and physically fit and complete Level One training by 30 Jun of the current training year.

Introductory Specialty Courses


INTRODUCTION TO LEADERSHIP COURSE (3 weeks)

Aim: To develop leadership and communications skills and to increase understanding of junior NCO duties. Intended for cadets in Level Two training.
Prerequisites: Must be medically and physically fit and complete Level Two training by 30 Jun of the current training year.
Training Centres: Albert Head, Trenton, Penhold

INTRODUCTION TO PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND RECREATIONAL TRAINING COURSE (3 weeks)

Aim: To promote the development of sportsmanship, ethical sports conduct, and teamwork skills and to encourage cadets to further pursue physical education and recreational training at their home squadron, in their own lifestyle, and potentially on the Athletic Instructor Course. Training in a variety of physical education and recreational opportunities. Develops theoretical, technical, and practical skills required for assisting with the delivery of the squadron PT program.
Prerequisites: Must be medically fit, have completed Level Two training by 30 Jun of the current training year, and have a moderate to high level of personal fitness.

INTRODUCTION TO SURVIVAL TRAINING COURSE (2 weeks)

Aim: Covers the fundamentals of survival training with emphasis on skills development and practical application. Instruction includes first aid; the construction of fires, shelters and signals, collection of food and water.
Prerequisites: Must be medically and physically fit and complete Level Two training by 30 Jun of the current training year.
Training Centres: Greenwood, Cold Lake

MUSIC COURSE, LEVELS 1-3 (6 weeks)

Aim: To further develop cadet musicians' playing ability, to train and qualify cadets in the various music levels at their own pace. Opportunities to perform at a variety of public and military functions and parades.
Prerequisites: Must be medically and physically fit and have completed Level Two training by 30 Jun of the current training year.

PIPES AND DRUMS COURSE, LEVELS 1-3 (6 weeks)
Aim: Identical to the Music Course, Levels 1-3 but designed for members of a squadron pipe and drum band.
Prerequisites: Must be medically and physically fit and have completed Level Two training by 30 Jun of the current training year.

INTRODUCTION TO RIFLE COACHING COURSE (3 weeks)

Aim: To further develop marksmanship skills and to provide the necessary skills to effectively coach fellow cadets during squadron range activities. Successful graduates of this course can also assist with range instructional duties.
Prerequisites: Must be medically and physically fit, and have completed Level Two by 30 Jun of the current training year.

INTRODUCTION TO AEROSPACE COURSE (3 weeks)

Aim: To familiarise cadets with the scientific, technical, and human aspects related to exploration and development of space.
Prerequisites: Must be medically and physically fit, and have completed Level Three training by 30 Jun of the current training year.
Training Centre: Saint-Jean

INTRODUCTION TO AVIATION COURSE (3 weeks)

Aim: Expands on those aeronautical subjects taught at the LHQ, designed for those cadets who have demonstrated aptitude and strong interest in the flying aspects of the air cadet program. Heavily academic with substantial classroom time, the training is well balanced between theoretical and hands-on learning. Not a prerequisite for future flying training, but can help cadets in preparation for glider and flying scholarship qualifying exams.
Prerequisites: Must be medically and physically fit, and either have completed Level Three training by 30 Jun of the current training year, or be 15 years of age prior to course start date.

INTRODUCTION TO INSTRUCTION COURSE (3 weeks)

Aim: To further develop the instructional skills taught during level three training, and prepare cadets to assist with instructional duties at their squadron. Key components of the training: instructing a skill lesson (drill), instructing a knowledge lesson, creating instructional material (training and learning aids), and acting in a manner appropriate for an instructor.
Prerequisites: Must be medically and physically fit, and have completed Level Three training by 30 Jun of the current training year.

Advanced Specialty Courses

MUSIC COURSE, LEVELS 4-5 (6 weeks)

Aim: Provides musical instruction at a more advanced level, giving the cadet the opportunity to qualify as Level 4 or 5 musician. Given in concurrently with Music Course, Levels 1-3 and intended for more accomplished cadet musicians. Emphasis placed on developing cadets' abilities as music instructors, to enable them to assist at their squadron.
Prerequisites: Must be medically and physically fit and have completed Level Three training by 30 Jun of the current training year and be qualified as Cadet Musician, Level 3 or 4.

PIPES AND DRUMS, LEVELS 4-5 (6 weeks)

Aim: Identical to the Music Course, Levels 4-5 but intended for advanced members of a squadron pipe and drum band.
Prerequisites: Must be medically and physically fit and have completed Level Three training by 30 Jun of the current training year and be qualified as Cadet Musician, Level 3 or 4.

SURVIVAL INSTRUCTOR COURSE (6 weeks)

Aim: To develop competence in survival skills together with instructional and leadership abilities to prepare the cadet as specialist instructor to assist the planning, organizing, and delivery of survival training at the squadron.
Prerequisites: Must be medically fit, have a high level of personal fitness, and have completed Level Three training by 30 Jun of the current training year.
Training Centre: Bagotville




ADVANCED AVIATION TECHNOLOGY COURSES (AATC)

These six-week national courses are designed to enhance instructional ability in technical skills and introduce background knowledge required in the aircraft maintenance and servicing trades. A significant amount of time is spent in class, and in servicing workshops and labs. There are two distinct courses:

AIRPORT OPERATIONS COURSE (AOC)

Aim: to further develop cadets' knowledge and skills related to aviation technology and airport operations. Candidates will develop advanced awareness of aviation technology fundamentals and gain practical experience in airport operations, including: airport and airside operations, air navigation/air traffic services and procedures, ground services for airports, airport safety and emergency preparedness, aviation technology history and advancements, and training and employment opportunities in fields related to aviation technology.
Training Centre: Georgian College, Barrie

AIRCRAFT SERVICING COURSE (ASC)

Aim: to focus on the technical specialties associated with aircraft servicing. In addition to the common training, candidates are exposed to flight line servicing (marshalling, ground handling, refuelling and cleaning of aircraft), principles of flight, gas turbines and careers available in the aircraft industry.
Training Centre: Canadore College, North Bay

Prerequisites: Must be medically and physically fit and have completed Level Three training by 30 Jun of the current training year.

ATHLETIC INSTRUCTOR COURSE (6 weeks)

Aim: To develop athletic skills as well as instructional and leadership abilities in physical education; emphasis on theory and technical skills required to deliver the physical training programme as a specialist instructor at the squadron.
Prerequisites: Must be medically fit, have completed Level Three training by 30 Jun of the current training year and have achieved the minimum fitness standard detailed at Appendix 1 to Annex N of CATO 54-20 (see: www.cadets.ca/support/cato-oaic/5420N1_b.pdf).
Training Centre: HMCS Ontario (Kingston)

GLIDER PILOT SCHOLARSHIP (6 weeks)

Aim: An intensive programme of ground school and in-flight glider pilot training leading to a Transport Canada (TC) Glider Pilot Licence and Air Cadet Glider Pilot Wings.
Prerequisites: Must not hold any TC pilot licence. Must be at least 16 years of age, be certified medically fit by a Canadian Aviation Medical Examiner, have completed Level Three training by 30 Jun of the current training year and grade 9 by the application deadline, and must obtain a minimum passing score of 50% on the qualifying exam. Height minimum 4'6"/137.16 cm, maximum 6'3"/190.5 cm; Weight minimum 90 lbs/40.82 kg maximum 200 lbs/90.72 kg .
Training Centre: Regional Gliding School (Central)

SENIOR LEADERS COURSE (6 weeks)

Aim: To provide advanced leadership training, practical assessment skills and instructional abilities. Skill development focus: problem solving; achieving high competency in drill, instructional technique, and communication; dealing with challenging situations as they relate to senior NCO duties at the squadron. Opportunities to practice teaching and assessment skills and to participate in team and individual sports.
Prerequisites: Must be no less than age 15½, be medically and physically fit, have completed Level Four training by 30 Jun of the current training year, and have successfully completed a previous summer training course.
Training Centre: Cold Lake

POWER PILOT SCHOLARSHIP (7 weeks)

Aim: An intensive programme of ground school and in-flight pilot training leading to a Transport Canada (TC) Private Pilot Licence and Air Cadet Pilot Wings.
Prerequisites: Must be certified medically fit by a Canadian Aviation Medical Examiner, have completed Level Four training by 30 Jun of the current training year and grade 10 by the application deadline, and must obtain a minimum passing score of 50% on the qualifying exam.
Training Centres: Various flight training units across Ontario

Exchanges and Other Summer Activities

SERVICE BAND (SB)

Aim: Places cadet musicians in a training centre band with an emphasis on public performances. The band performs at a wide variety of military and civilian parades and other functions.
Prerequisites: Must be medically and physically fit, have completed Level Three training by 30 Jun of the current training year, and be a cadet musician, level three or higher.
Training Centre: Trenton

OSHKOSH TRIP

Aim: Provides the opportunity for selected cadets from the stand-by list for GPS or PPS to attend "AirVenture," one of the largest general aviation exhibitions in the world, held annually in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
Prerequisites: Be selected from the GPS or PPS stand-by list.

INTERNATIONAL AIR CADET EXCHANGE (IACE)

Aim: To develop personal and leadership qualities together with practical citizenship skills enabling the cadet to gain a better understanding of the culture and history of the country they visit while serving as ambassadors of Canada. Exchange cadets visit air bases, centres of industry, world landmarks, universities, cultural centres and museums, plus they experience private hospitality with families in their own homes. Participating nations have previously included Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, Japan, Netherlands, Singapore, United Kingdom and United States of America.
Prerequisites: Must be at least age 17, be medically and physically fit, and have completed Level Five training by 30 Jun of the current training year.
